The surprising results of India’s election
On June 4, results came in from the largest democratic election in history. Over 640 million people voted in India’s election, which took place at over one million polling places across the country over the course of six weeks.
Many predicted that India’s prime minister Nerandra Modi and his party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would dominate the election, grow their ranks in Parliament, and further impose their Hindu-nationalist ideology on the country.
However, that wasn’t what happened. Modi was reelected, but his party lost over 60 seats in the lower house of Parliament. The BJP will have to govern as part of a multi-party coalition, and most likely moderate their Hindu-nationalist aspirations.
On this episode, you’ll hear from Ashutosh Varshney, a political scientist at Brown University and director of the Watson Institute’s Saxena Center for Contemporary South Asia (watson.brown.edu/southasia/) , about this historic election: what led to its surprising outcome, what it means for the Hindu-nationalist movement embodied by Prime Minister Nerandra Modi, and what it might tell us about the struggle for democracy occurring in countries around the world.

When it comes to governing our economy, estimates rule the day. We want to know what effect a policy might have on the government’s budget, on economic growth, on employment…in the next 1 year, 5 years, 10 years…you get the idea. If you want to make (or critique) public policy, you better have numbers to back it up. To get those types of estimates, economists and politicians often rely on insti...

How American firearms fuel violence in Mexico

Mexico, like the United States, has a gun violence problem. It has one of the highest murder rates in the world, and most of those murders come from firearms. In 2019, for example, almost 70% of the country's 35,000 murders involved firearms. But unlike the U.S., Mexico doesn’t have tens of thousands of licensed firearms dealers. It has two. So how do so many guns make their way into Mexico? An...

    The reality of the "climate crisis" is that you start with a critical equation. Multiply the number of electricity consumers by the amount of electricity demanded on average. Add a band up and down. Then factor in the metal and other resource needs necessary to provide this supply. If your aggregate energy and materials demand is very high and constant, you better be willing to allow hydrocarbons in your energy mix; this is especially the case if you do not have a nuclear energy supply. For the sake of the UK, please do not support "carbon neutral" practices. Instead, build out energy infrastructure that is cost competitive (within genuine reach). It is no longer value adding to say, "we have found that energy sources that do not rely upon combustion are valuable because we believe they do not impose as many external costs. Here is an extensive, panic-inducing list of current and future external costs if we cannot derive energy from non-combustion sources." Now, you either are PROVIDING non-combustion energy that meets the needs of the market (scalable and reliable 24 hours per day every day and actually affordable) OR you are a FEAR monger preying upon the young and vulnerable.

    Here is the perspective of a Bernie volunteer on Trumps prosecutions. A r@pe case involving a victim that doesn't know when it happened. A hush money case involving a porn star listed as a legal expense. A business fraud case where the bank/"victim" testified in his favor. A RICO case where the very worst actions the state claims anyone committed was phone calls and filing false documents. And every case is expected to go to trial and END within one year of indictment and before the election.

    There's always politics involved, it's just a matter of how far away it is happening from actual democracy. When the Fed tells Congress to end the Capital tax strike, I'll take the politics of the economy a little less seriously. May as well let the Fed break up monopolies and police anti competitive behavior while you're at it. We have the market theories, if it were up to the intellectuals, the Fed could dial in whatever level of competitiveness and efficiency it liked!

    • @PolicyFailureIsExpensive
      @PolicyFailureIsExpensive 4 дні тому

      I understand the desire for some body to be able to influence what could be seen as "monopolies" (specifically, structures you find harmful). However, I suggest this would not be the free market at all. It would be the use of government force (which comes from the threat of physical violence) to destroy the cumulative choices of the free market to eliminate your rivals. Policing anticompetitive behavior might be more appreciative of the free market, but it would depend totally on the specifics of such a practice; otherwise, this work will very quickly become the process of picking winners and losers via central planning.

    • @ywtcc
      @ywtcc 4 дні тому

      @@PolicyFailureIsExpensive The whole point is to make things more efficiently, not to be polite. I think you're missing the point of a business. We're supposed to be making things ever more efficiently, not ripping people off ever more thoroughly. We can be better than that. Financialization and Maoism have the same effect. What do you think we're talking about when we say economy? It's really not the same as making money. What we're doing, ultimately, is identifying good for nothings that want to sit around, do nothing productive, and get paid for it. Call these people rent seekers. Your view of government and the economy is entirely toxic and unscientific. There's no getting government out of business, markets were created by a monopoly of force in the first place. Grow up and learn how to talk about business regulation like an adult.

    So he gets to denigrate people like Murray Rothbard because "he's not a trained historian" and also Adam Smith on economic questions? I especally liked how he uses an ad hominem against Smith, saying that because Smith had an interest in making money from the sales of his books that he wasn't truthful. Doesn't this guy have a book out? I guess he's also a "serious thinker" like Hume, which puts him above wanting to make money from the sales of his books. What puerile nonsense. This presentation is so replete with fallacies that I find it hard to believe he even has a BA in philosophy. Oh, you've heard of Smith but not Hume so much, right? Aha! See, Smith is a charlatan. Wow. This is beyond stupid. I hear that in his next book he's going to expose Einstein for the fool he was. You've all of heard of Einstein, right? Well, there you go.

    Benny Morris is biased and does not tell the truth, the full truth. He ignores the role of the British colonials In oppressing every Palestinian attempt to organise. The European Zionist came to Palestine with the objective of building a state helped by the British colonial government with a Zionist British high commissioner. That is why they have organised structures and helped by the British. Any Palestinian who was able to organise was either expelled from Palestine or killed. Benny Morris ignores all these facts. Does not even mention British role in giving the Zionists the freedom of building an Army and well organised military and civil structures.

      If you talk to Libertarians, the golden era of rights was in the pre civil war era. Which happened to be a period of institutionalized slavery. This apparent contradiction is why the politics of Liberal rights are met with skepticism. (In the pre civil war era, rights were only guaranteed by the Federal government. Other levels of government did not respect rights, nor were they required to.) We have rights, you've just been misinformed by Liberals and Libertarians about how they've been using them. (Not just the bill of rights, we have civil rights, and some semblance of labor rights remain. Rights Libertarians are especially prone to overlooking.) Also, your notion of any kind of *permanent* privileges is an attempted to overthrow all future democracies. That leaves replacing the ruling group as the solution. Because that's the actual solution. It happens periodically.
